Today I met Raju Iyer. Raju is a resident at Huntington Downs Apartments on Roper Mountain Road in Greenville. Raju’s apartment was destroyed in the fire on Monday night. Says Iyer, “I was sitting in my living room working on my laptop and then my modem began to spark and burst into flames.” Raju said that other residents began banging on his door yelling at him to get out. Thankfully he was alone in the apartment and was able to get out without injury.

I asked him if he had a place to stay and he told me that the apartment management had provided him a place to stay and he was to pick up the new keys later in the afternoon. He said he didn’t know if he would keep living there or not. Raju has lost most of his belongings. He said his renter’s insurance had expired a few months earlier and that his passport was lost in the fire. He is a guest worker from India and said he is unable to return to work with the proper documentation.
